If you're looking for a natural way to improve your sleep, CBD may be helpful1–2.
But not every CBD product for sleep is created equal.
In short, a high-quality CBD oil for sleep should:
- Come from a transparent brand (so we know with 100% certainty the product is clean and the ingredients are clear);
- Contain CBD, but also other cannabinoids and terpenes (CBD works best in synergy with other cannabinoids and terpenes), and;
- Contain other types of sleep-improving compounds (nature provided us with many sleep-improving compounds, after all).
Based on these and a few other less important metrics like ‘taste', we have listed the best CBD oils for sleep below.

We have consistently ranked Receptra Naturals hemp-extracts very high in the past 3 years.
Here’s why:
Since their birth, they have always been completely transparent about their:
- Cannabinoid-profiles;
- Terpene-profiles;
- Third-party lab-test reports regarding contamination, and;
- Their manufacturing processes.
With Receptra you're always sure AND have proof for every batch that you get a product that's:
- Contaminant-free, and;
- Packed with beneficial hemp-derived cannabinoids and terpenes.
When you check the third-party lab-test reports, you’ll see that this CBD tincture contains a wider variety of hemp-derived cannabinoids and terpenes than any other tincture.
Receptra Naturals products are full-plant hemp-extracts products of the highest order.
What’s even better:
Recently, Receptra Naturals developed new CBD products, and one of them contains additional sleep-improving compounds.
Receptra Naturals Serious Rest is a full-spectrum hemp-extract that contains:
- Chamomile, and;
- Valerian root.
Both of these compounds have been associated6–7 with mild hypnotic action and improvement of sleep.
This means that this product satisfies both of the most important characteristics a high-quality CBD sleep product should have:
- It contains a wide variety of cannabinoids and terpenes in high concentrations, and;
- It contains additional (non-hemp-derived) sleep-improving compounds.
When it comes to sleep, this is the best CBD product you can get.

When it comes to CBD products for sleep, we prefer full-spectrum products.
To recap why:
Various studies3–5 indicate that CBD produces better effects when taken together with other hemp-derived compounds.
There’s just one potential problem with these products:
They always contain THC.
THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis plants. And while the THC-level of federally legal CBD oil is always less than 0.3% …
That’s still enough to fail a drug test.
Then there’s another potential downside to THC inside CBD products when you take very high doses:
In my experience, if you take high doses of CBD products with THC, you can still feel mild psychoactive effects.
If you want to avoid THC for any of these or other reasons, full-spectrum CBD oil is out.
NanoCraft Night Formula is a broad-spectrum, THC-free CBD oil that’s specifically formulated for deep and restorative sleep.
‘Broad-spectrum' means that it contains additional hemp-derived cannabinoids other than CBD, but never any THC.
But here's the best part about this product:
It contains nano-emulsified CBD. Nano-emulsified CBD is easier to absorb than regular CBD, exactly how much remains unknown, however.
We do know that 1 milligram of nano-emulsified is more potent than 1 milligram of regular CBD, but exact numbers no one can currently give you.
It also has the best customer reviews of any CBD oil specifically formulated for sleep. Since this oil came out a few months ago, it already has an average rating of 5/5 out of 200 customer reviews.
Besides CBD, it contains many additional (non-hemp-derived) sleep-improving compounds:
- Lavender;
- Passionflower;
- 5-HTP, and;
- Melatonin
Bottom line?
If you’re looking for a THC-free CBD-aid to improve your sleep, this is the best one you can get:

- Melatonin;

This means it only partially satisfies our first most important characteristic that a good CBD sleep product should have but excels on the second:

- It contains the most sleep-improving compounds of any product on our list.

NuLeaf Naturals is another pure hemp-extract:
It contains nothing but hemp-derived compounds.
So while this isn't a product specifically formulated for sleep, it has a very favorable cannabinoid- and terpene-profile compared to most other options.
This means that NuLeaf Naturals hemp-extracts have the most important feature a sleep-improving CBD product should have:
A diverse cannabinoid- and terpene-profile.
Again, if you're looking to test whether CBD together with other hemp-derived cannabinoids and terpenes will improve your sleep, it's best that you get a pure hemp-extract like the one from NuLeaf Naturals.
Producing pure hemp extracts, that literally contain nothing BUT hemp-derived compounds is what NuLeaf Naturals does best. There's not a single compound inside this product that doesn't come from the hemp plant or seed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Using CBD Oil for Sleep
How to Use CBD Oil for Sleep?
The best way to take CBD oils/tinctures is to take them sublingually before swallowing. How you take it sublingually is by taking a dropper (or whatever the recommended dose is) and putting it beneath your tongue for 60 seconds. After using this method, swallow the oil for even better results (don't spit it out).
By taking your CBD oil/tincture sublingually, you partially avoid the breaking down and loss of potency of CBD in the gastrointestinal tract and liver.
If you want more tips and tricks to maximize the effectiveness of CBD, please read our guide on how to use CBD oil.
When to Take It?
CBD is not a medicine and everyone reacts differently to it.
However, I can tell you about my experience. When I take CBD oil 45 minutes before going to bed, it improves my sleep in the best way.
If you mostly have trouble falling asleep, you can try taking it earlier: 90 minutes before sleep.
How Much Should I Take?
We always recommend using the recommended dosage from the manufacturer. Usually, they’ve tested their products and have data from many customers.
For example:
Some of these products contain melatonin, and if you would take a higher than the recommended dose, you may be taking too much melatonin.
That said, when it comes to pure hemp-extracts that only contain hemp-derived compounds, I always experience great effects with a dose that equals 25 mg. of CBD.
When Can I Expect to Get Better Sleep?
This highly varies per person. I experienced great results the first time I took a high-quality, full-spectrum, CBD-rich hemp-extract.
Are There Side Effects?
CBD can produce various side effects, ranging from minor ones like fatigue to severe ones like drug interactions.
CBD products can also be contaminated with toxins that are absorbed by hemp plants during their cultivation. If you ingest these contaminants over a longer period of time, you risk severe side effects that can compromise your health.
