Today you’re getting a complete in-depth review of CBDfx as a brand and its most popular CBD products.
CBDfx has been a great value-for-money CBD brand since 2014.
Compared to other CBD brands, there are a few places where CBDfx shines above others:
- Great value for money products;
- A satisfaction guarantee which they recently officially removed, but is still available under certain circumstances;
- Terpene-rich CBD vape products (one of the few);
- A wide variety of products, including alternative cannabinoids like CBG and CBN;
- Highly transparent and always backed by third-party lab-test reports on a batch-by-batch basis.
But there are also a few places where CBDfx could better:
- They don’t sell true full-spectrum CBD products;
- Their products score worse on cannabinoid-profile than some other high-quality brands;
- Although all their products contain a terpene complex, there’s no lab test that exactly shows what terpenes exactly are present and in what concentrations.
How do their products compare to those from other brands?
Let’s find out.

Brand Overview CBDfx
CBDfx is a California-based CBD brand. Their hemp is grown in Kentucky farms and grown organically, although no USDA organic certification can be found anywhere. We have to trust them on their word here.
The extraction method used for all of their products is the supercritical CO2-extraction method. This extraction method is used by the vast majority of CBD product manufacturers.
Supercritical CO2 extraction is generally a clean and safe method to extract cannabinoids. However, It’s not the best extraction method to extract volatile terpenes from hemp.
That being said…
CBDfx adds a terpene complex to almost all of its products. It’s unclear whether these terpenes are derived from hemp or other sources.
It’s also unclear what this terpene complex exactly consists of.
From testing their products, we know that they’re not lying and their products indeed contain terpenes. How can we test this? Terpenes have a highly distinct taste and smell. After reviewing hundreds of cannabinoids products and cannabis strains we know terpenes when we smell or taste them.
Still, we would’ve liked more transparency with regards to their added terpene complex.
Other than this small shortcoming, CBDfx is one of the most transparent CBD companies in the industry.
All of their products come with full lab-test reports, including:
- Heavy metals;
- Pesticides;
- Microbials, and;
- Residual solvents.
Safety and Transparency CBDfx
When it comes to safety, quality control, and transparency, you’re in good hands with CBDfx.
While this is great, the honest truth is that in this day and age, it’s not that special anymore.
Of course, it’s a requirement for a CBD brand to be fully transparent on things like:
- Cannabinoid-profile;
- Heavy metal screening;
- Pesticide screening;
- Residual solvent screening, and;
- Microbiological screening.
And these are also exactly the tests and screenings you’ll find for every CBDfx product, on a batch-by-batch basis.
But every respectable CBD brand does exactly the same.
All you need to know is that if you use CBDfx products, you’re using products from a highly transparent and trustworthy brand.
You’re using products that are completely clean from toxins and contaminants.
The Hemp Source of CBDfx CBD Products
Kentucky hemp farms. That’s where CBDfx sources its hemp.
Kentucky is one of the more developed states for the agriculture of hemp. It’s in the top-3 of hemp production of all U.S. states.
According to CBDfx, these hemp farms grow hemp using organic farming principles.
When we look at the average cannabinoid-profile of CBDfx products, they’re quite low on minor cannabinoids.
This is usually the case when a company uses also the stalks and stems of hemp plants to produce an extract.
This isn’t necessarily bad. But when it comes to hemp plant parts, it’s the flower that contains the highest level of cannabinoids and terpenes.
For example:
When you check the cannabinoid-profile of an average Receptra Naturals or R+R Medicinals product, you can clearly see that it contains a wider variety of cannabinoids and does so in higher concentrations.
The Production Process of CBDfx (After Harvesting the Hemp Plants)
Just like the majority of CBD brands, CBDfx makes use of the supercritical CO2-extraction method.
Compared to other CBD extraction methods, the biggest benefit of supercritical CO2 extraction it’s a very clean and food-safe method to extract cannabinoids.
The biggest downside is that it’s not the most effective method for extracting volatile terpenes from hemp plants.
That being said, with CO2 extraction you can still expect an amazing cannabinoid-profile.
Here’s the thing:
The cannabinoid profile of an average CBDfx product is worse than that of other high-quality brands.
That means they either use:
- Largely other plant parts than the flower parts, or;
- The hemp plants themselves don’t have great cannabinoid-profiles in the first place.
We don’t know what’s the case with CBDfx.
Despite the subpar cannabinoid-profile, you can rest assured that
In any case, based on the available information, the production process of CBDfx after harvesting the hemp plants seems fine on the surface.
CBDfx CBD Oils/Tinctures Review
Oils and tinctures are the foundation of any CBD brand.
They’re the most popular, most-used CBD products and the first type of product we always review from any brand.
CBDfx has various types of CBD oils. While in their early days, they had CBD oils with a focus on CBD, today all of their CBD oils are some combination of CBD and alternative cannabinoids.
They’re currently selling three types of tinctures:
- CBD Oil Sleep Tincture (CBD:CBN ratio of 6:1);
- CBD + CBN Oil Calming Tincture (CBD:CBN ratio of 7:1);
- CBD + CBG Oil Wellness Tincture (CBD:CBG ratio of 2:1);
We’ll dive into each of these individually and explain our review process and experience using the products.
Cannabinoid-profiles
First, to understand why cannabinoid-profiles have such an important role in our review process, we have to look at the effectiveness of cannabinoids.
Multiple studies show that a combination of cannabinoids is more effective than one isolated cannabinoid.
One analogy we like is comparing cannabinoids to vitamins. Isolated vitamins are much less effective than vitamins taken together with other vitamins and minerals. The same holds true for cannabinoids like CBD: they’re more effective when taken together with other cannabinoids, and other hemp-derived compounds like terpenes.
As explained, the cannabinoid-profiles of CBDfx tinctures are not the best compared to some other high-quality brands.
However, they’re also not the worst.
Besides the main, cannabinoids, there are at least some small concentrations of minor cannabinoids.
Let’s take a look at the cannabinoid-profile of each product now:
Cannabinoid- Profile CBDfx CBD Oil Sleep Tincture 1000mg
As you can see, CBD (3%) and CBN (0.44%) are abundant in this oil.
CBD and CBN are a great combination for sleep in our experience. And there’s even some scientific backing for this. Although evidence is still limited, CBD already has been shown to improve sleep in insomnia patients (1). And CBN is found to be the most sedative of all cannabinoids (2). CBN oil products can be more effective for sleep than CBD products for some people.
There’s also a small concentration of CBG (0.21%) and an even smaller concentration of CBDV (0.03%).
These concentrations are so small that they probably won’t give you any noticeable benefits associated with these specific cannabinoids. However, it’s very likely that they contribute to the entourage effect of cannabinoids (3): a multitude of cannabinoids being more effective than a single isolated cannabinoid, and a multitude of cannabinoids sometimes creating unique beneficial effects that otherwise wouldn’t occur.
Cannabinoid- Profile CBD + CBN Calming Tincture 1000mg
Here again, CBD and CBN are the most abundant cannabinoids.
The purpose of this product is to ‘calm’ you. Well, CBD and CBN are a great combination for that.
However, the concentration of other cannabinoids is almost non-existent.
Yes, some other cannabinoids are present in detectable levels, but the levels are so low that it’s unlikely that you’ll experience any benefits associated with these cannabinoids individually. It is possible that these small concentrations will contribute to the entourage effect of cannabinoids. But we can’t tell for certain.
Cannabinoid- Profile CBD + CBG Oil Wellness Tincture 1000mg
This tincture only contains CBD and CBG. Based on this lab-test report, it looks like this oil is simply a combination of CBD isolate and CBG isolate.
It doesn’t really look like a hemp-extract, otherwise, it would contain at least small concentrations of other cannabinoids.
In our experience, the combination of CBD and CBG is slightly more energizing and uplifting compared to CBD alone. Some people prefer pure CBG oil products over CBD products for daytime use.
CBG has some benefits that overlap with those of CBD. The most well-researched benefits of CBD include its anti-inflammatory effects. CBG has anti-inflammatory effects partially through a different mechanism of action than CBD (4). Therefore a combination of CBD and CBG could, for example, be more effective for anti-inflammatory effects. There are however no scientific data to back up this theory (yet).
All CBDfx tinctures that we have tested are THC-free and therefore qualify as broad-spectrum.
Terpene-profiles
All of CBDfx tinctures contain a propriety terpene complex.
It’s unclear what this terpene complex consists of.
When you take CBDfx tinctures, you can clearly taste the terpenes. So they’re not lying when they say their products contain terpenes, even though none of their tinctures some with a terpene test.
We would’ve liked more transparency here. For now, all we can say is that you’re going to consume terpenes when taking one of these tinctures.
Whether they’re hemp-derived terpenes or terpenes derived from other plants, we don’t know.
Studies have indicated that terpenes as well beneficial effects individually (5) and can act synergistically with cannabinoids like CBD to enhance each other’s effects and create unique effects (6).
But it’s likely that especially the synergistic benefits of terpenes with cannabinoids are only there with hemp-derived terpenes, and not terpenes derived from oranges or mint for example.
Our Test Results with the Products
At Herbonaut, we test A CBD product’s effectiveness according to how well it improves:
- Exercise-induced inflammation and pain;
- Situation-dependent anxiety, and;
- Sleep in general.
We always test any CBD product with 3 different persons. With full- and broad-spectrum products (like from CBDfx), dose-wise, we always test a dose that contains around 50mg of CBD. We’ve found that 50mg of full- or broad-spectrum CBD is the sweet spot when it comes to testing these types of products. CBD isolate products we test with a dose of at least 100mg CBD because, with isolate products, you simply need a higher dose to achieve similar effects.
If you’re new to CBD, we always recommend experimenting with different doses, starting low (25mg), and slowly working your way up until you’ve found your sweet spot.
We love that CBDfx formulated different tinctures for different purposes: sleep, relaxing, and wellness.
However, that doesn’t mean that the sleep tincture can only be used for sleep. You can use it to relax as well. And the calming tincture can be used for sleep as well. Therefore, you don’t need to get two products if you’re trying to cover multiple purposes.
Below you’ll find our ratings per product:
Test-Results CBDfx CBD Oil Sleep Tincture 1000mg
Scientific and anecdotal evidence shows that CBD can be used to improve sleep.
Besides the cannabinoids CBD and CBN, this tincture contains:
- 5mg melatonin per serving, and;
- A sleep terpene-blend.
5mg melatonin is a bit high to our taste, but it’s effective for a good night’s sleep. Until now, research hasn’t found any significant side effects related to melatonin supplementation. But it’s unclear whether there are any noteworthy interactions between long-term CBD and melatonin supplementation. Therefore we like to be cautious, and wouldn’t use this tincture on a daily basis for very long periods of time.
That being said…
This tincture indeed does improve your sleep very effectively.
Melatonin and CBN are not compounds that you necessarily want to be using during the daytime. This tincture will make you sleepy within a few hours at max, therefore only use this tincture during the evening. Melatonin supplements also always caution that you shouldn’t drive or use machinery 4-5 hours after taking melatonin. Although there’s no official warning, we highly recommend the same with this tincture.
Also, if you experience unexpected side effects the next morning, like irritability or feeling groggy, it’s possible that these are caused by the melatonin inside this tincture.
We honestly prefer the CBDfx calming tincture, also when it comes to sleep
Test-Results CBD + CBN Oil Calming Tincture
Scientific and anecdotal evidence shows that CBD can be used to reduce anxiety.
This is the best tincture CBDfx has to offer currently.
It’s a tincture with high concentrations of CBD, CBN, and a blend of calming terpenes.
It also contains small concentrations of minor cannabinoids.
Based on the information and our experience this is a true hemp-only product.
It has very similar effects to other hemp-only products like those from NuLeaf Naturals, for example.
Because of the CBN, this tincture is more sedative than an average CBD oil. A dose that equals 50mg CBD might be too high for daytime. If you want to use this tincture during the day, start with a dose that equals 25mg CBD and adjust from there.
If you want to take this tincture for sleep or during the evenings when you’re not planning to drive or use machinery, a dose that equals 50mg CBD or higher is perfectly fine and preferable for some people.
When it comes to our tests, this tincture works well to relax but works equally well for sleep. For sleep, we would recommend a dose of at least 50mg CBD.
On days that I slept worse and felt irritable, this tincture noticeably make me feel calmer.
Test Results CBD + CBG Oil Wellness Tincture
This tincture is a combination of CBD and CBG.
In our experience, CBG has more energizing and uplifting effects than CBD. So naturally, when you combine CBD and CBG, you will likely experience more energizing and uplifting effects than taking CBD alone.
This tincture as well contains a terpene blend and two additional non-hemp compounds:
- Curcumin, and;
- Coenzyme Q10.
Both these compounds are associated with various health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In theory, both these compounds are a great addition to any cannabinoid product because of their health benefits.
Both these compounds have no immediate noticeable effect, however. So the potential long-term benefits you will have to take for granted.
Testing this tincture, we found it to be a bit energizing and uplifting, probably because of the high CBG-content. Therefore, we don’t necessarily recommend this tincture for evenings or bedtime. But if you want to experience a small boost in the morning or daytime, this tincture could work well.
Also, when it came to exercise-induced inflammation, we didn’t find this tincture more effective than the other two tinctures.
If you want a full explanation of how we test CBD products, please read this article.
Taste
This is one part of CBDfx tinctures that we absolutely love.
All of their tinctures taste great, but in an all-natural manner: only with terpenes.
No artificial flavors or non-hemp ingredients to improve the flavor. Just terpenes.
Terpenes are simply the best way to add natural taste to CBD products.
Terpenes can taste a bit too strong for some people, and not everyone likes the taste of terpenes. For example, cannabis smell has a particular smell because of the terpenes. Hemp also often has a characteristic smell that’s based on the specific presence and combination of terpenes.
CBDfx tinctures however don’t have a hempy taste. You can taste a bit of citrus. Therefore, it’s likely that these tinctures are bolstered also with non-hemp terpenes.
That’s great for the taste, possibly less good for the effects because CBD’s beneficial interaction and synergy with terpenes are most likely limited to hemp-derived terpenes.
Price/Value
When CBD products just became federally legal, CBDfx was one of the best value-for-money CBD brands. Their tinctures definitely belonged to the category of cheap CBD products.
Today, however, the same can’t be said.
Their prices are average when compared to other brands.
At Herbonaut we standardize the price in the following two ways:
- How much CBD (in mg) you get per $1;
- How many minor cannabinoids and terpenes (in mg) you get per $1.
CBD per 1$ speaks for itself.
But if you’re going to claim that you’re product is broad- or full-spectrum, we also exactly want to know how many minor cannabinoids and terpenes are inside.
Let’s take a look at the three tinctures.
CBDfx CBD Oil Sleep Tincture 1000mg gets you:
- 14.28mg CBD per $1, and;
- A minimum of 3.5mg minor cannabinoids and terpenes per $1.
CBD + CBN Oil Calming Tincture gets you:
- 14.28mg CBD per $1, and;
- A minimum of 3.5mg minor cannabinoids and terpenes per $1.
CBD + CBG Oil Wellness Tincture gets you:
- 14.28mg CBD per $1, and;
- A minimum of 3.5mg minor cannabinoids and terpenes per $1.
Compared to the averages of:
- 14.57 mg CBD per 1$, and;
- 3.1mg minor cannabinoids and terpenes per $1…
We can see that CBDfx is right around the average based on the 1000mg bottles.
If you buy the 2000mg or 4000mg bottles, the value becomes significantly better.

The bottom line:
CBDfx provides great broad-spectrum (THC-free) products. While most THC-free products are nothing more than CBD isolate products, CBDfx products always contain at least one or two minor cannabinoids in meaningful concentrations.
